'Microsoft will lay off 10,000 employees, CEO Nadella confirms'

Afraid of the global recession, technology companies around the world are laying off on a large scale. After Twitter, Amazon, Meta and Ola, the world's largest software company Microsoft will also lay off 10,000 employees this year. The company's Indian-origin Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Satya Nadella has confirmed this in a letter to the company's employees.

CEO Nadella has said in a blogpost written for employees that this is being done keeping in mind the economic condition of the company and the changing preferences of consumers. He also said that the company is taking steps focused on long-term goals. Nadella said that the employees to be fired have been informed. Some of these have been removed with immediate effect. This will save the company about $ 1.2 billion.

The layoffs in the world's largest software company are set to begin with the engineering department. Earlier in July also the company had laid off 1,000 of its employees. In fact, as of June 30, 2022, Microsoft had a total of 2 lakh 21 thousand full-time employees. Of these, 1 lakh 22 thousand employees were employed in the United States, while 99 thousand employees were working internationally.

It is worth mentioning that earlier many tech companies including Twitter, Amazon and Meta have laid off in view of slow demand and worsening global economic conditions. Other companies including Amazon have fired 30,611 people in the first six days of January. ShareChat has also announced 20 per cent layoffs. At the same time, recruitment in the country's four largest technology companies TCS, Wipro, Infosys and HCL Tech has declined by 97 percent.
