'CAIT demands probe into alleged sale of hemp on Amazon'

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAT) has approached the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) to probe the alleged use of e-commerce company Amazon's platform to sell banned substance ganja. Amazon has also said to investigate the matter at its level.

Business organization CAIT on Wednesday sent a letter to the director of NCB urging it to take immediate cognizance of the matter. CAIT's National General Secretary Praveen Khandelwal said that Amazon's involvement in illegal activities to harm India should not be overlooked. He said that the matter should be investigated under the NDPS Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Khandelwal said how Amazon was unable to trace what was being sold on its platform, which is a big question. He said that Amazon is not only actively providing support to this racket but is also actively involved in smuggling of ganja through its portal. The CAT Secretary said that Amazon has violated Section 20 (b) of the NDPS Act, under which 'production, manufacture, ownership, sale, purchase, transport, inter-state import, inter-state export or use of cannabis is punishable. Is.'

On this matter, e-commerce company Amazon India said that it is investigating the matter. An Amazon India spokesperson said that we have been informed about this, which we are investigating if there has been any wrongdoing on the part of the seller. He said that we are cooperating fully with the investigating officers and law enforcement agencies and will ensure full compliance with the law.

It is noteworthy that last week in Madhya Pradesh, Bhind police busted an online ganja sale racket. Two people were arrested in this connection, from whom 20 kg of banned substance was seized. According to the officer probing the case, the accused were operating the racket through a leading e-commerce firm, which used to get a share in the profits.
